Shandong Medical University

Found in 1901, Shandong University is a key comprehensive university directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the oldest renowned universities throughout the country and one of the high-ranking universities whose development is given priority by the state.
The main campuses of Shandong University is located in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, with a branch in Weihai, a coastal city in Shandong. The current president is Dr. Zhan Tao, a renowned mathematician.
The school of Medicine is located on the west campus of Shandong Univerisy. Its garden-like campus is quiet and tasteful, full of trees and flowers with its buildings in a style which combines traditional Chinese and Western architecture. Sitting at the foot of the scenic Qianfo Mountain and in the vicinity of the famous Baotu Spring and with the Botanical Garden to the south and the Square of Spring City to the north, the school provides an excellent learning and research environment for motivated students wishing to pursue study in medicine.
Shandong University School of Medicine was the major part of the former Shandong Medical University. Its long history can be traced back to 1891 when Huamei Medical School was first established in Jinan. Based on it Gonghe Medical College was set up in 1903. And in 1911 the completion of the Teaching Hall of Gonghe Medical College marked the formal establishment of the Medical College of Cheeloo University, Shandong Provincial Medical College and East China Norman Bethune Medical College. In its 90 years history the school witnessed many historic events such as the decline of the Qing Dynasty, the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War.

Teaching Conditions

Along with maintaining its focus on teaching and scientific research the school also attaches great importance to the construction of disciplines and training of the faculty. Its students' enrollment has been steadily increasing. Presently the school has 391 teaching staff members including 93 professors and 98 associate professors, among whom 41 are doctoral program tutors and 103 master's program tutors. It has 2 postdoctoral working stations for basic medicine and clinical medicine, 2 doctor-degree programs for the first-rare disciplines in basic medicine and biology, 15 doctor-degree programs for the second-rate disciplines, and 26 master-degree programs. The school offers a 6-year undergraduate program for clinical medicine (whose instruction is mainly given in English) and a 7-year program for clinical medicine, which integrates the training of undergraduate into that of postgraduates. There are now 2049 fulltime undergraduate students including 1227 for the 5-year program, 393 for the 6-year program and 429 for the 7-year program. There are also 1029 postgraduates including 784 candidates for master degree and 355 candidates for doctoral degree.

It has established technical cooperation, academic exchange, program collaboration and visiting scholar relations with many foreign schools including Medical Colleges of University of Kentucky and University of Utah in the U.S.A, Medical Colleges of Queensland University and Sydney University in Australia, Wakayama Medical University in Japan and Institute for Human Gene Therapy of Medical College of University of Pennsylvania in U.S.A.
