Fujian Medical University

Fujian Medical University is at present the only university of modern medical science in Fujian Province.It is located at the foot of Wushi Hill in the center of Fuzhou City. The campus covers about 170,100 square meters, with total construction space of 130,000 square meters. Since its establishment in 1937, the school has fostered more than 20,000 graduates, over 200 post graduates and more than 10,000 adult and graduate students.


FMU has approximately 5,400 people on its staff, including faculties, doctors and nurses, with over 960 staff members on the home campus. Among 830 full-time teachers, 58% are with doctoral or master's degree and 55.1% with senior professional title. The university has 65 doctoral supervisors, 4 listed into the national young and middle aged experts with tremendous contributions, 5 candidates for The New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, 3 categorized by Health Ministry into the young and middle aged experts with tremendous contributions, 3 as outstanding young teachers subsidized by the Education Ministry, 8 as leading teachers subsidized by the Ministry of Education, 100 specialists enjoying special allowances from the State Council, 17 provincial outstanding experts, 64 candidates for the Provincial Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, 4 chosen as distinguished teachers of Fujian university, 28 as universitys' candidates for The New Century Provincial Outstanding Talents Support Project and 2 innovation groups selected from Fujian University as well.


Scientific Research

There are 65 research institutions in FMU, including 19 provincial research institutions, 1 provincial research center, 4 various technological platforms for scientific research, and 2 laboratories jointly developed by Fujian Province and the Ministry of China, 3 key laboratories granted by the Provincial Department of Education, and 4 graded laboratories of Fujian Province.
Since 2001, the university has undertaken 883 various longitudinal scientific research projects, among which it has taken charge of or taken part in 12 state support programs for tackling key scientific and technological difficulties in "Project 863, Project 973 and the 11th Five-year Development Program". What is more, 144 national, ministerial and provincial scientific and technological awards have been achieved, including 2 National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, 43 patents of invention. The university has also developed such new drugs as Acutobin and Anticarcinogen.

Talents Cultivation

Since its establishment, FMU has produced more than 30,000 students with various degrees. At present, it has an enrollment of over 12,5-- full-time students, including 10,500 undergraduates and nearly 2,000 doctoral and postgraduate students. The university has been authorized to admit students from 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the mainland of China, and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan for undergraduate programs.

Subject Development

Currently, FMU comprises 19 colleges and departments, offering 23 undergraduate programs, 8 second-class doctoral programs and 22 third-class doctoral programs, 4 master degrees in first-class discipline, 45 second-class master's programs and 59 third-class master's program, and 2 professional master's programs. In addititon it has a postdoctoral center for researches, with 2 key subjects of "Project 211", 13 provincial key subjects, 8 subjects listed as priorities by the Department of Science and Technology of Fujian Provincial Government, 6 key medical subjects of the province and 5 leading characteristic specialities of medical treatment in the province.


Affiliated Hospitals

There are 10 hospitals (clinical colleges) attached to FMU, including 9 comprehensive affiliated hospitals (clinical colleges), which are all upper first-class hospitals and 1 stomatological hospital, with more than 10, 050 beds in total. Furthermore, the university possesses 26 clinical teaching hospitals. A fairly perfect network of bases for clinical teaching and practice has thus been developed.
